Van Gogh depicts a man reaping wheat in a golden field with piles already laid down behind him. In his paintings, he was not interested in mimicking reality but used intentional expressions of color through an almost sculptural approach with his thick pigments. He was often engaged in scenes of vast golden fields, the reaper, in particular, is a reference to the biblical metaphor of the rapture though he wrote of death as not a sad occurrence.
