"Tobacco Leaf" Glass Sculpture.
Limpia by Jordy Rengifo Poma and Terry Teufel
In the Amazon, tobacco has been a bridge between the human and the spiritual for hundreds of years. Offered to the spirits, used in healing ceremonies, carried as medicine, it holds knowledge that cannot be seen.
Huayruro seeds, red and black, and unmistakable. Woven into a bracelet, gifted and placed on a newborn’s wrist, it carries the intention of protection from bad energy. It embodies a collective care.
Human faced pupae reflect on the vulnerability of insects, who are disappearing at an alarming rate, and vulnerability of human life at early stages.
Limpia means to cleanse, to clear, to make safe. Together, the insect forms, the tobacco, and the seeds, are a quiet call to attention: to recognize vulnerability around us and to protect the most fragile.
Terry Teufel
In another era, I was a fairly accomplished glass blower, dedicated public employee, and stretched thin, trying to be great at essentially two careers! After spending 34 years with the county board of developmental disabilities, I was fortunate to be able to retire in 2011 and redirect my attention to art.
In 2012 I become a volunteer docent at the TMA. I've also had the time and opportunity to be involved in other art media like printmaking, sculpture, and jewelry, but always return to glass making of some sort. I have fused, slumped, cast glass, screen printed and developed photos on glass, as well as constructed objects. I've most recently been working at fusing and slumping wafer thin glass.
