"Sushi Series" Cloisonne Brooch.
Cloissone Enamel, Sterling Silver.
3 1/2" W x 1 3/8" H.
Cloisonné (from French: cloison, "compartment") is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with colored material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold or silver. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné. In modern day, vitreous enamel is used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used historically. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments to the object by soldering or affixing silver or gold wires to the surface. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often many colors. Cloisonné enamel objects are fired in a kiln for finishing.

I was born, raised, and reside in Toledo, Ohio. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology at The University of Toledo and then received a medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. I have been practicing m7edicine since 1988 and am still a busy practicing physician. My training in metalsmithing has been primarily through the Toledo Museum of Art and specialized workshops. My work has appeared in numerous shows and publications.
