Sgraffito Vessels
Based on the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, this series of glass vessels combines two artistic techniques developed during the Italian Renaissance.
Reticello, a type of blown glass made with canes organized in a crisscross pattern to form a fine net, and Sgraffito, a decorative technique that involves cutting away parts of a surface layer to reveal another prepared surface. The word Sgraffito comes from the Italian word "graffiare" which means to scratch.
Originating in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, Sgraffito played a significant role during the Italian Renaissance with artists painting palace facades in Rome and other cities.
Marc VandenBerg
Working with my hands is therapeutic, allowing me to communicate thoughtfulness, self-reflection, honesty and a pursuance of excellence. Creating with glass is my way of announcing my existence and communicating my thoughts and feelings with others.
