"I try to make my art reflect the peace and harmony of the beautiful environment of the Teton Mountain Range. I choose to live in the midst of beauty and try to create lyric vessel forms which reflect the sublime quality of this fabulous place." -Laurie Thal

Laurie Thal moved to Jackson, WY in 1975 after graduating from the Art Institute of Chicago. She packed her car and moved west, hoping for a lifestyle that would allow her to practice her craft and enjoy the outdoor western environment. She started her own studio that year, refining her skills over time, working to create timeless classic vessels of simple beauty.

In 2002, Laurie invited Lia Kass to collaborate by creating unique surface designs to embellish Laurie's blown glass pieces. Lia uses multi-level sand carving techniques to create softly shaded imagery and sometimes sculpt and reshape the lip of a piece.

Laurie has received two Wyoming State Fellowship Awards in 1989 and 2002 (along with Lia) and her work was featured at the Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition, an honor given to only 50 artists across the state of Wyoming each year. In 2002 and 2007, Laurie and Lia received Wyoming Start Art Museum Purchase Awards. Laurie's work is exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the country. In 2009, President Barack Obama presented the Thal-Kass vase "Peacock" to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India.

I've been involved in art design my entire adult life. For many of those years, I worked in Lithography creating album covers, magazine design and corporate graphic art. Glass has been a focus in my life for many years starting with the design and creation of leaded glass windows. More recently I have become passionate about Fused Glass. This combines my skills from leaded glass design to create many challenging and beautiful architectural commissions and glass sculptures.

Sandblasting glass vessels is the culmination of a lifetime of skills from drawing, cutting, and carefully sandblasting glass. I love working with the rich colors of glass, revealed as I blast through several layers. Each piece is unique and presents a new challenge to combine my skills of drawing, now more demanding on a three-dimensional surface. This requires incredible focus to execute the art of sandblasting and carving the edge of delicate glass vessels. I am honored to work with Laurie in her studio and look forward to the wonderful work we will create in the future.
