"Libebula I"
Hanging Ceramic Sculpture.
Limpia by Jordy Rengifo Poma and Terry Teufel
In the Amazon, tobacco has been a bridge between the human and the spiritual for hundreds of years. Offered to the spirits, used in healing ceremonies, carried as medicine, it holds knowledge that cannot be seen.
Huayruro seeds, red and black, and unmistakable. Woven into a bracelet, gifted and placed on a newborn’s wrist, it carries the intention of protection from bad energy. It embodies a collective care.
Human faced pupae reflect on the vulnerability of insects, who are disappearing at an alarming rate, and vulnerability of human life at early stages.
Limpia means to cleanse, to clear, to make safe. Together, the insect forms, the tobacco, and the seeds, are a quiet call to attention: to recognize vulnerability around us and to protect the most fragile.
