Hoseok Youn
Youn's work explores contemporary materialism and consumer culture. His work represents his generation in consumer culture and speaks of people's fantasy of wealthy life. Hoseok is interested in Venetian traditional glass and his body of work, BEAST series includes figurative and fantastic characters constructed out of Venetian traditional glass components and stemware designs. Venetian glass, as known as Murano glass, made out of clear glass, Cristallo which was almost transparent and considered the finest glass in the world. It was Europe's major center for luxury glass during the Italian Renaissance and created a wealthy merchant class with long history, secret recipes, fine techniques, elaborate decorations, and craftsmanship. Hoseok was inspired by the traditional designs and techniques of goblet and applied these elements to his body of work as a symbol of wealth. This series is his commentary on his generation's materialistic culture. Hoseok finds the current obsession with conspicuous consumption and materialism as it relates to social and economic status fascinating. The complex relationship between materialism, power, social class structure, self-fulfillment, competition, and evaluation of worth seem to shape individuality and identity today. This consumer culture mirrors the people play with characters and avatars in the digital worlds such as building their character's identities, upgrading for power, and competing each other. This unreal, dramatic, and competitive attitude is carried over to the real world where people strive to portray a fantastical life of luxury.
