Elio Quarisa
1936 - 2010

Elio started working in the Murano glass factories at the age of nine years old. In 1949 he was hired at the Barovier & Toso glass studio, which has been specializing in Murano glass since 1400. Here he worked for 27 years and left as an affirmed Primo Maestro. After he worked with a number of the great studios and designers on Murano, including the studios: Seguso Vetri D'Arte (working with Professor Poli), Venini (working with Fulvio Bianconi), Moretti Ulderico, Vetreria De Mayo and Elite.

He traveled around the world teaching all that he has learned to his students. He considered the best reward to be when his students; and there has been a number of them, tell him "Maestro Elio your passion has inspired me and you have changed my life!" This is truly the magic of glass.

He taught workshops and demonstrations for private studios and institutions including the Glass Art Society, Pilchuck Glass School, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Toledo Museum of Art.

Until his death in 2010, he lived in Murano, and he considered taking up glass art as an opportunity that has kept him tied very closely to his Muranese roots.

"I love this remarkable island that has seen in its history some of the greatest glass artists in the world; some of them my dear friends and colleagues who are still living here, such as Alfredo Burbini, and a couple blocks away from my home, Lino Tagliapietra."

Elio's charm and effervescent personality are as visible in his work as his intense precision and accumulated skill. His work is included in the collections of museums, collectors, students, and enthusiasts throughout the world.

The Quarisa Legacy Collection
2000 - 2010

The Collection is comprised of one-of-a-kind works of art created by Elio at various engagements during the last decade of his life. Many were produced to demonstrate and transmit the techniques, dynamic, and spirit of traditional Murano glass to students and spectators.

Each piece represents Elio's personal expression of the Murano tradition, a passion he set out to share. Along with the unforgettable opportunities many had to witness him working, these whimsical masterpieces continue to inspire, and will do so for generations to come.
