Cody Winter - Regional Artist
Cody R. Winter is a Gouache landscape artist based in Toledo, Ohio. He is originally from Riga, Michigan; a place where life progressed at a slower pace and the bucolic, Midwestern scenery would eventually become the primary subject for his landscapes. His work aims to expand upon the traditions of the American Luminists by realistically depicting a wide variety of landscapes through the use of exacting detail, convincing light effects, and expressive color.
Artist Statement
From the initial meditation of a scene at hand to the finalizing touches, painting is a thrilling, albeit immensely demanding process that can never be fully perfected. Though this process is relatively the same, each painting is a new challenge with its own set of problems awaiting their ultimate resolution. I have always begun the same way; by studying reality and its intricacies firsthand. From there, I take a reference photo and largely work from memory, with the photograph to sparingly assist along the way.
I intend for my body of work to be traditional, pensive, quietly grandiose, and beautiful. As always, these four elements must remain present in every piece I create while coinciding with the creative progression that occurs over time. This progression or innovation should always build upon the past and is the foremost task of an artist. Thus, the innovation I present to you - the viewer, are original pieces that: build upon the permanence of a timeless past, capture the serene beauty of the landscape at present, and evoke rational contemplation of the future.
