My goal is to create a modern artifact steeped in history. Prior to becoming a glass artist, I was a painter. I have always been excited about surface design, color and texture. The Minoans were one of the first cultures to draw intricate designs on their pottery using the sea as a reference. I use similar surface designs that were discovered on Crete, 1400-1350 B.C. Much of my color reference is from Roman glass shards located in the Toledo Museum of Art. In the design of my vessels, I apply up to five separate layers of glass threads varying in color and size. I design the pattern on each vessel while it is being blown and shaped. Once the piece has been annealed, I sand etch the surface and bathe it in a sugar acid solution. I hope my work conveys my passion for glass, ancient and modern art, and instills a passion in you the viewer.
Biography
Bill Poceta is one of the leading studio glass artists working today. He creates one of a kind blown glass vessels that resonate with both the past and present. His work is influenced by various glass and ceramic forms found in ancient cultures including Greek, Roman and Egyptian. Being a former painter, the surface of his work becomes a painting in glass. The reference for his surface designs can be traced to the Minoan culture, 3000 B.C. Although his reference is ancient functional form, his glass vessels are modern and architectural. Bill's museum quality work engages the viewer with beautiful forms and surface designs that can be traced to the late Bronze Age.
Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1946, Bill earned is BS degree in Art Education and a MA degree in Painting. He studied glass at the Center for Creative Studies also in Detroit. He has worked with internationally known glass artists, including Hank Adams, Herb Babcock and Albert Young. He maintains a studio and teaches glass at Michigan Hot Glass in Detroit. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and his work can be found in private, public and corporate collections. Joseph T. Marks, Curator of Collections and Exhibits at the University of Michigan's Alfred Berkowitz Gallery wrote, "Bill has the perfect combination of technical expertise and creativity in his work." Bill has been featured at the Toledo Museum of Art which has one of the largest collections of ancient glass in the United States.
