Tom McGlauchlin

Tom McGlauchlin was born September 14, 1934 on his family's farm about 3 miles from Beloit Wisconsin. He was the youngest of eight siblings. Three years later the family moved to Beloit where Tom grew up with a great deal of freedom and experienced many harsh realities of the depression.

He entered the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1954 with a Major in Engineering but switched to a major in Art the middle of his sophomore year. He studied pottery with Harvey Littleton and Toshiko Takaezu and sculpture with Leo Steppat. He received his B.S. in Art in 1959 and M.S. in Art in 1960. The next year 1960-61 Littleton asked Tom to teach his pottery classes full time so that he could take a leave of absence to explore glass blowing. After that year everything changed in the world of glass.

Tom Married Pat Smith, also a pottery student of Littleton's, in 1961 and moved to Mt. Vernon, Iowa where Tom began his teaching career at Cornell College. In 1964 Tom was hired by the University of Iowa Art Department to start the second course in glass blowing to be offered in the U.S. Among his students were Fritz Dreisbach, Dan Edler, Tom Potter and Peter Layton. In 1965 Tom built his own studio in his garage/stable for a total cost of $500.

In 1971 Tom and his family moved to Toledo where he began teaching glass blowing in the University of Toledo-Toledo Museum of Art joint art program.

In 1984 the Museum eliminated the glass program from the Museum budget, effectively removing all University courses in glass blowing. At that time Tom began creating glass art in his studio and selling it through art galleries across the country and beyond.

Tom remained actively working until his death of pancreatic cancer on April 4, 2011.
