Skot Horn - Toledo Artist

Born 1958, Fremont, Ohio.

Squeezing the paint out of the tube the night before painting may very well be the best discovery I've made in the studio. Creating a distance between myself and my work, like meditating, takes practice. It also makes any issues easier to see and resolve. I've also learned that it's better to stop before I'm finished and a good way to do that is by signing my name. For years I have used the pseudonym "Skot Horn." I call it my "Mark Twain" if anybody asks. It's primarily a visual preference.

Sometimes the concept of painting seems archaic in a technologically consumed world where any artistic technique can be mimicked and printed on any desired surface. But I would miss the tactile surface of canvas and Alizarim Crimson tracked aimlessly around the studio floor.

I rely on intuition and memory when I paint; discarding any expectations or photographs I may have. I work hard for my work to feel spontaneous. At this stage my idiosyncrasies are well established and having multiple canvases going at once seems to work best. Unexpected discoveries can be so easily overlooked by overworking. Judging a painting too soon was a hard habit to break so I still hide it away in another room for another day.

It's a tricky business fooling oneself but I'm nothing if not persistent. There are no set rules to follow, and every painting is different. What works for one painting might not for the next. Operating under the premise that I know enough to find my way through unchartered territory has worked for me and if I don't know it by now, I probably don't need to know it.
