I work alone in my studio to create my work using a hand blown glass process.The furnace is filled with clear molten glass, and all color techniques are applied by using hot colored glass, which comes in the form of rods, frit and powers.
I am fascinated by the concept of using a hard yet fragile industrial material to create sensuous art objects. The glass forms I produce are constantly changing. I am always working to develop new techniques, constantly pushing the glass in new directions. My work deals with the vessel in various formats. I employ the vessel as a utilitarian object as well as a sculptural component. My main concerns are shape, color technique and contrast, proportion and most importantly the visual relationship from the exterior versus the interior of each piece.
Biography
Mark Wagar is a Toledo native and has a B.F.A. in Glass from Bowling Green State University. He spent most of his life as a resident of Toledo's Historic Old West End, blowing glass at the Toledo Museum of Art's hot shop. His work is in the homes of collector's around the world and he has received the Dominic Labino Award for Excellence with Glass twice. He has a piece in the permanent collection of the Evansville Museum in Evansville, IN. He also was recently acquired in the Fort Wayne Art Museum's permanent collection.
