Jonathan Davis - Toledo Museum of Art G.A.P.P. Residency Artist

My work involves multiple processes, interchangeable components and a variety of materials with a focus on blown glass. As my creative process has evolved, I have blurred the lines between lampworking and traditional glass blowing in aspects of technique, scale, and texture. There is excitement in the unknown while each piece is created and ideas are translated through the use of heat and movement. The modular nature of my work allows for creative spontaneity during assembly and leaves space for the unexpected, dissolving the barrier between existence and action.

Biography

Jonathan Davis is an artist from Durham, North Carolina who has been practicing his love for art, music, and agriculture since childhood. While studying jazz at North Carolina Central University in 2001, Jonathan had the opportunity to apprentice as a glass craftsman at the Carolina Glass Arts Studio located in the central park district in downtown Durham. He has studied and worked with many talented artists including renowned master glassblower Emilio Santini and taught glassblowing to hundreds of students and talented groups like the Cirque du Soleil performance troupe.

Davis creates sculptural art, specializing in lighting and installations. He utilizes a number of processes in his work such as sandblasting, cold working, painting and powder coating. With a bright, playful, style that is abstract and uncommon, many liken his work to a mixture of Dr. Seuss and Alice in Wonderland.

Jonathan spends much of his time travelling, creating glass sculptures, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, and considering how to use his time wisely.
