Frans Hals Portraits: A Family Reunion

Frans Hals (1582/83–1666) is one of the foremost portrait painters of the Dutch Golden Age, but he only painted four family group portraits. This publication unites these family portraits, along with related works by the artist and his contemporaries, and examines the topic of Hals’s family portraiture as a whole, placing it in the context of his complete body of work. The book is published to accompany the exhibition of the same title, co-organized by the Toledo Museum of Art and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, which debuts in Toledo October 13, 2018–January 6, 2019. The exhibition then travels to Brussels (February 1 – May 19, 2019) and to the Fondation Custodia-Collection Lugt in Paris (June 8 – August 25, 2019).

In 2011 the Toledo Museum of Art acquired The Van Campen Family in a Landscape by Frans Hals. Subsequent conservation of Brussels’ painting Three Children with a Goat-Cart confirmed that these two works originally formed one portrait of the large Van Campen family. The canvas was separated for unknown reasons, likely in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The catalogue reunites the surviving sections of the Toledo/Brussels painting and proposes a reconstruction. It also presents new discoveries about the Van Campen family, placing them in Haarlem society of the early 1600s.

Essays by Lawrence W. Nichols (Toledo Museum of Art), Liesbeth De Belie (Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium), and Pieter Biesboer (Frans Hals Museum, emeritus).
