Elio Quarisa - Toledo Museum of Art G.A.P.P. Residency Artist

Elio Quarisa started working in the Murano glass factories at the age of nine years old. In 1949 he was hired at the Barovier & Toso glass studio, which has been specializing in Murano glass since 1400. Here he worked for 27 years, and left as an affirmed Primo Maestro.

After he worked with a number of the great studios and designers on Murano, including the studios: Seguso Vetri D'Arte (working with Professor Poli), Venini (working with Fabrio Bianncci), Moretti Ulderico, Vetreria De Mayo and Elite. He traveled around the world teaching all that he has learned to his students.

He considered the best reward to be when his students (and there has been a number of them) tell him “Mastero Elio your passion has inspired me and you have changed my life!” This is truly the magic of glass.

Until his death in 2011, he lived in Murano, and he considered taking up glass art as an opportunity that has kept him tied very closely to his Muranese roots. “I love this remarkable island that has seen in its history some of the greatest glass artists in the world; some of them my dear friends and colleagues who are still living here, such as Alfredo Burbini, and a couple blocks away from my home, Lino Tagliapietra.”
