Inspired by the 1962 Studio Glass Movement, born in Toledo, Ohio.
Celebrate transformation with the Seventeenth Annual Limited-Edition Ornament, handcrafted exclusively for the Toledo Museum of Art. Designed by Ohio native and internationally acclaimed artist Bandhu Dunham, the butterfly draws inspiration from an 1888 presentation plate in the Museum's collection-part of the
Blumen Serie created by Viennese glassmakers J. & L. Lobmeyr. This historic masterpiece blends classical, Baroque, and Biedermeier motifs, where flowers, insects, and natural forms intertwine in dazzling detail.
A universal emblem of growth and renewal, the butterfly reminds us of the beauty found in change. Dunham brings this spirit to life in hot borosilicate glass, shaped by hand using traditional lampworking techniques. Each piece is then hand-painted with iridescent lusters containing precious metals, creating shimmering rainbow hues. No two ornaments are alike; each bears the distinctive touch of the artist, celebrating the vitality of glass in motion. Available only at the Toledo Museum of Art, this ornament embodies heritage, craftsmanship, and transformation.

J. & L. Lobmeyr (Austria, Vienna),
Presentation Plate from the “Blumen Serie” (Flower Series), Designed 1888, colorless glass: blown, enameled, gilded, 17 ¾ in. diameter (45 cm), Purchased with Funds from the Florence Scott Libbey Bequest in Memory of her Father, Maurice A. Scott, 1983.9
Exemplifying the eclectic 19th-century style of historicism (Historismus), in which artists looked back to previous styles for inspiration, this plate combines classical palmettes around the outer edge; a wide band of luscious acanthus scrolls recalling 17th-century Baroque motifs; and the delicate flowers, insects, and snakes abundant on porcelain and glass of the Empire and Biedermeier styles of the first half of the 19th century in Austria and Germany. The spectacular “Flower Series” of glass retailer and tastemaker J. & L. Lobmeyr of Vienna included a wide variety of luxury tableware, of which this plate is one of less than a handful of examples that survive.
