Amy Beeler - Toledo Area Artist

Artist Statement

For many years now, I have been fascinated with seed pods. I find their protective exterior and the potential for life underneath that exterior fascinating. After making my first pod piece in 2005, using an actual seed pod, I was enthralled not only by the pods themselves, but also by the response of others to the seed pod. There is something unexpected about using the seed pods in jewelry, and this is what inspired me to push the idea farther in 2007 and start casting the pods. Through trial and error I have continued to turn these pods into jewelry. First as body adornment, meant to have a person sit back and think about the jewelry, and how the piece can actually create emotion rather than just be beautiful. This, I explored by creating a numbered seed pod series. And in many of these pieces I have enhanced the beauty of the pods by adding pearls. I find these soft organic gems the perfect accent for the protective exterior of the pods.

Bio

Amy Beeler, graduated, with a B.F.A., from Bowling Green State University, in 2000; majoring in jewelry and metalsmithing. After graduation she worked as a commercial bench jeweler for a couple big name jewelry stores, in Toledo, broadening her skills and diversifying her talents. After several years, Amy decided to make a move back to her fine art roots, and work for herself. This led to her being invited to take part in some of the largest and most prestigious art fairs and gallery exhibitions, not only in our area, but in the nation; from Massachusetts to California, with many shows in between. In 2014, a solo exhibition of her work entitled Passion and Adornment and curated by George Kingorn was held at the University of Maine Museum of Art. Most of Amy’s work is done in sterling silver, and involves the casting of seed pods; bringing the most intricate details of the pods back to life and turning them into a stunning array of award winning, fine art jewelry.
